We Need to Take Some Time Off

Black Velvet Cocktail

Alas, not an April Fools’ joke

We’re sad to report that Father of Kitchen Riffs passed away recently. The “oldster,” as we affectionately called him, was 99 and lived a good life. His doctor advised us several weeks ago that the end was coming, but it’s still a shock when it does.

So we’re taking two or three weeks off.

Oh, and the picture that tops this post? It’s the Black Velvet Cocktail, which reportedly was invented to commemorate the passing of Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria.

It’s an appropriate drink for us this week. We lift our glasses to The Oldster.

  24. I'm so sorry for your loss, John. 99 years! That's amazing! Think about how the world has changed in that time. The Oldster was born when women were just gaining the right to vote, and lived to see a day when a woman could almost become president!

  31. John, I am so very sorry. "The Oldster"--I love that! I've found that when my loved ones lived into their 90s their death was all the more shocking, in a way, because I had come to believe the magic that since they'd lived that long they would just keep going. Silly, I know. Big virtual, socially distant hugs.
